Medicine, Religion, and Health: Where Science and Spirituality Meet (Templeton Science & Religion) Medicine, Religion, and Health: Where Science and Spirituality Meet (Templeton Science & Religion)

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

Medicine, Religion, and Health: Where Science and Spirituality Meet will be the first title published in the new Templeton Science and Religion Series, in which scientists from a wide range of fields distill their experience and knowledge into brief tours of their respective specialties. In this, the series maiden volume, Dr. Harold G. Koenig provides an overview of the relationship between health care and religion that manages to be comprehensive yet concise, factual yet inspirational, and technical yet easily accessible to non-specialists and general readers. Focusing on the scientific basis for integrating spirituality into medicine, Koenig carefully summarizes major trends, controversies, and the latest research from a wide variety of disciplines and provides plausible and compelling theoretical explanations for what has thus far emerged in this relatively young field of study. Medicine, Religion, and Health begins by defining the principal terms and then moves on to a brief history of the role that religion has played in medicine before delving into the current state of research. Koenig devotes several chapters to exploring the outcomes of specific studies in fields such as mental health, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. The book concludes with a review of the clinical applications that can be derived from the research. Koenig also supplies several detailed appendices that will aid readers of all levels looking for further information. Medicine, Religion, and Health will shed new light on important contemporary issues and will whet readers appetites for more information on this fascinating, complex, and controversial area of research, clinical activity, and populardiscussion. It will find a welcome home on the bookshelves of students, researchers, clinicians and other health professionals in a variety of disciplines.

Sex and the Soul: Juggling Sexuality, Spirituality, Romance, and Religion on America's College Campuses Sex and the Soul: Juggling Sexuality, Spirituality, Romance, and Religion on America's College Campuses

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

Based on dozens of face-to-face interviews, Sex and the Soul explores the sexual and spiritual lives of today's college students. Donna Freitas crisscrossed the country, visiting a range of America's colleges and universities-from public to private, Catholic to evangelical-to find out what students had to say about these highly personal subjects. Their stories will not only engage readers, but, in many cases, move them with the painful struggles these candid young women and men face. Indeed, the book uncovers aspects of college life that may unsettle some readers, especially parents. Many campuses, for instance, are dominated by the pervasiveness of hook-up culture. Moreover, many students see little connection between sex and religion, even as they seek one between sex and spirituality. Indeed, these observations hold true even at Catholic schools. Only at evangelical colleges is religion an important factor when deciding whether or not to engage in sex. But Freitas's research also reveals that, even at secular schools, students are not comfortable with a culture of casual sex, and that they do want spirituality, at least, if not also religion, to speak about what they should do and who they should try to be-not just what they should avoid doing. Sex and the Soul will offer readers the chance to hear college students speaking honestly about extremely sensitive topics, in a book that will be of great interest to students, parents, clergy, teachers, and anyone who wants to know what's happening on today's college campuses. Named one of the Best Religion Books of 2008 by Publishers Weekly "Fascinating, disturbing...engaging...persuasive...Freitas's work chronicles a poignant spiritual loss that students themselves articulate and mourn." -Publishers Weekly "Candid, disturbing, yet ultimately hopeful...Throughout this beautifully written book, Freitas presents students' feelings and experiences in an unflinching yet compassionate way. You care about these young people a

Religions Of Star Trek Religions Of Star Trek

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

Is there a God? What evil lurks beyond the stars? Can science save one's soul? Profound questions like these have consumed human thought over the ages; they also inspired the original creators of the "Star Trek" canon of TV series and films. "Religions of Star Trek" tackles these challenging questions head-on in a remarkable look at one of sci-fi's great success stories.Analyzing more than three decades of screen adventure, the authors depict a "Star Trek" transformed, corresponding to the resurgence of religion in American public discourse. The authors identify the many religious characters in "Star Trek," tracing the roots of scientific humanism to more contemporary aspects of religion and spirituality. Through it all, the creators' visionary outlook remains constant: a humanistic faith in free will and the salvific nature of dispassionate scientific inquiry. This book was not prepared, licensed, approved, or endorsed by any entity involved in creating or producing the "Star Trek" television series or films.

A Time for Listening and Caring: Spirituality and the Care of the Chronically Ill and Dying A Time for Listening and Caring: Spirituality and the Care of the Chronically Ill and Dying

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

The connection between spirituality and health has been receiving a lot of attention in both the scientific and lay presses recently. Is religion good for your health? Should doctors talk with their patients about their spiritual or religious beliefs? Should doctors pray with their patients? Through research and evidence, spirituality has been shown to be central to the care of the dying. It is therefore critical that healthcare providers know how to address a patient's spiritual needs. This book presents current thinking on how spiritual care can be integrated into traditional caregiving in a practical and informed manner. Chapters that specifically address different religious and cultural perspectives are included. Patients' stories are used throughout to offer real-world experience. With a foreword by the Dalai Lama, this book is a thoughtful and informative guide for anyone involved in cxaring for the chronically ill or dying.

Gay Spirituality Gay Spirituality

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

In this challenging and unusual book, Toby Johnson argues that while popular religion is supposed to be "the conveyor of wisdom," it relies on old myths that fail to address the most pressing issues of modern life (among them, the destruction of our environment, biotechnology, and racial equality). Gay men, he claims, by virtue of their position outside the mainstream, have developed ways of seeing that can help us develop a more evolved spirituality. Johnson's chief inspiration is Joseph Campbell, whose illuminations on myth and comparative religion have become wildly popular in the last two decades. But Johnson lacks much of Campbell's subtlety, and has a tendency to rely too much on Jungian thought. He argues against a dualistic world-view, for example, while reproducing some amazingly simplified views about women. And where are lesbians in Johnson's vision? All the enlightened knowledge bearers he anticipates are gay men (and childless ones, by the way). Despite these lapses, Gay Spirituality offers a lively romp through much New Age thought and, in Johnson's descriptions of biblical misreadings and cultural ignorance, a priceless survey of stupidity. Whether gay men can bring about a change in human consciousness is unclear--it is even less clear that, as Johnson breezily announces, "there is a goodness and virtue that runs through gay men's lives"--but his book should inspire serious thinking among spiritually minded gay men, and can serve as a useful antidote to Larry Kramer's Faggots. --Regina Marler

Autism and Spirituality: Psyche, Self and Spirit in People on the Autism Spectrum Autism and Spirituality: Psyche, Self and Spirit in People on the Autism Spectrum

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

Olga Bogdashina argues persuasively that, contrary to popular belief, spirituality plays a vital role in the lives of many people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Drawing on interdisciplinary research from fields as diverse as psychology, philosophy, anthropology, linguistics, neuroscience and religion, as well as first-hand experiences of people on the spectrum, she shows how people with ASD experience their inner worlds and sense of self, and how this shapes the spiritual dimension of their lives and vice versa. She presents a coherent framework for understanding the routes of spiritual development and 'spiritual giftedness' within this group, offering insights that will inform understanding of how to support and nurture spiritual wellbeing in people with ASDs. This book gives a voice to both verbal and non-verbal individuals on the autism spectrum whose spiritual experiences, though often unconventional, are meaningful and profound. It is essential reading for all those interested in the spiritual wellbeing of this group, including pastoral carers and counsellors, ministers of religion, spiritual leaders, parents and carers and individuals on the autism spectrum.

Spirituality: A Guide for the Perplexed (Guides for the Perplexed) Spirituality: A Guide for the Perplexed (Guides for the Perplexed)

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

Spirituality' is a word that is used increasingly these days yet it is often ill-defined. What exactly is spirituality? Is it distinct from religion and can we separate it from beliefs and traditions? Does spirituality mainly focus on spiritual experiences and practices or is it something more? This book suggests that, while there may be common features in the use of the word, 'spirituality' is not a single reality. Different 'spiritualities' reflect particular religious or philosophical viewpoints, as well as the cultural contexts in which they arise and develop. Spirituality: A Guide for the Perplexed provides students and general readers with a reliable and comprehensive guide to 'spirituality' as an area of study, religiously, historically, philosophically and in the social sciences. It explores the tools that are used to study the subject and to interpret spiritual classics (whether these are written texts or other forms such as art) from different times and cultures. Attention is paid to spirituality in a variety of religious and non-religious forms in their own terms and comparatively. However, for the sake of simplicity greatest attention is given to the study of spirituality within a religious perspective with illustrations drawn from texts, personalities and themes associated with five major world religions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. The book concludes with an exploration of spirituality in contemporary perspective - in particular how spirituality is currently employed in areas such as health-care, education and business among other examples.

Naked Spirituality Naked Spirituality

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

I've had my fill of superficial religiosity. But deep religion, authentic, naked spirituality - that's what I'm thirsty for, and so, I think, are you. In our busy lives we often sideline prayer and spiritual practice, or wrap the subject up in a tangle of guilt-driven showmanship and 'self-motivation'. Stripping away the jargon that we can often get caught up in, NAKED SPIRITUALITY presents the core concepts of prayer in a fresh and accessible way. Brian D. McLaren has spent years working with these concepts in his own life and shares candidly his own experiences and insights as well as challenge in this very applicable book. Using twelve words as a structure, he shows how we can connect with God in practical, doable and durable ways, and use that connection to serve others.

365 Steps to Practical Spirituality: A day-by-day guide to finding health, contentment and inner peace 365 Steps to Practical Spirituality: A day-by-day guide to finding health, contentment and inner peace

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

This book is aimed at anybody and everybody who is interested in spirituality - in general, and their own in particular. It employs the widest possible definition of spirituality - the non-physical aspects of existence and draws on most of the world's great religious, philosophical and spiritual traditions. It emphasises the 90 per cent on which all can agree. Practical spirituality is about self-knowledge, self-empowerment and searching for peace and contentment in a seemingly imperfect world. Through a mixture of insights, anecdotes, quotations, and practical activities, this book will help readers to understand what 'spirituality' means and how it differs from religion.

Indie Spiritualist: A No Bullshit Exploration of Spirituality Indie Spiritualist: A No Bullshit Exploration of Spirituality

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

After years of heavy addiction, Chris Grosso found himself literally on his knees, utterly lost and broken. He needed a new way to approach life, something that went beyond conventional religious or spiritual doctrine-free of bullshit. Drawing on his punk rock roots and question-everything mindset, Grosso offers a collection of stories and musings about his meandering journey of self-inquiry, recovery, and acceptance. He rejects all the hypocrisies and judgments of religion to show that spirituality is not something that only happens on meditation cushions or yoga mats, in sanghas, churches, mosques, temples, or synagogues. It's not always peaceful and quiet. It can be as loud as a rock concert or as alternative as Grosso himself. And it's up to you to find and follow your own path. Brutally honest, bitingly humorous, and radically unconventional, Grosso's collection of vignettes shows what it means to live an authentic, open, and mindful life. Indie Spiritualist empowers you to accept yourself as you are, in all your humanity and imperfect perfection.

A Brief Guide to Secret Religions A Brief Guide to Secret Religions

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

This wide-ranging book explores the diversity of esoteric and occult beliefs. Neo-Paganism is one of the fastest-growing new religions in the western world where witchcraft or Wicca, Druidry, and Urban Shamanism are thriving. Alongside this there has been an upsurge in New Age ideas of an even wider variety, including astrology, Tarot, numerology, and many others. And then there are members of various schools of occult science, practising High Magic. Why this new interest in old beliefs? Why are millions of educated people today abandoning both the established religion of their parents and 21st century scientific rationalism and turning to magic and esoteric teachings? In their search for spirituality those who follow these paths claim to be applying ancient wisdom to the modern world. The Brief History of Secret Religions, a companion book to The Brief History of Secret Societies, looks at the history and variety of these esoteric movements, where they came from and what they tell us about the world today. Praise for The New Believers: 'an excellent guide to fringe religions that juxtaposes "respectable" movements and those conventionally dismissed as cults.' The Telegraph.'no-nonsense, comprehensive survey packed with non-judgmental information about the beliefs, aims and activities of such movements. Daily Mail.

Jazz Religion, the Second Line, and Black New Orleans Jazz Religion, the Second Line, and Black New Orleans

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

In his new book, Richard Brent Turner explores the history and contemporary significance of the popular religious traditions, identities, and performance forms celebrated in the second lines of the jazz street parades of black New Orleans. The second line is the group of dancers who follow the first procession of church and club members, brass bands, and grand marshals. Here musical and religious traditions interplay. Jazz Religion, the Second Line, and Black New Orleans examines the relationship of jazz to indigenous religion and spirituality. It explores how the African diasporist religious identities and musical traditions--from Haiti and West and Central Africa--are reinterpreted in New Orleans jazz and popular religious performances, while describing how the participants in the second line create their own social space and become proficient in the arts of political disguise, resistance, and performance.

Fits, Trances, and Visions: experiencing religion and explaining experience from Wesley to James Fits, Trances, and Visions: experiencing religion and explaining experience from Wesley to James

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

Fits, Trances, & Visions is a wide-ranging cultural study of some of the most controversial and dramatic expressions of Christian spirituality. Faith healing, possession, clairvoyance, out-of-body experiences, speaking in tongues, animal magnetism, and even hypnotized crabs are among the many subjects described by the fearless Ann Taves, a professor of history and religion at Claremont College. The book's primary focus is the debate between religion and psychology about the sources of such dramatic spiritual experiences. From the mid-18th to the early 20th century, believers and skeptics clashed over the question of whether God was supernaturally present in these experiences, or whether they were merely natural expressions of physical disease or psychological disorder. Taves is especially attentive and sympathetic to the conclusion reached in the early 20th century by William James, who argued that charismatic spirituality was both natural and religious. Taves does sometimes get bogged down in theoretical language, but Fits, Trances & Visions is noteworthy for offering sympathetic and sophisticated attention to a realm of religious experience that too often receives little more than scholarly scorn. --Michael Joseph Gross

Keeping the Faith Without a Religion Keeping the Faith Without a Religion

aus der Kategorie Englische Bücher / English Books

What is faith? It is not something we must receive from a religion, nor is it a quality we must abandon in order to become rational. "Faith," writes bestselling author Roger Housden, "implies a basic trust in the way life weaves its patterns-an awareness that is not passive or fatalistic, but actively engaged with and accepting all of life's twists and turns." At a time when more and more people self-identify as "spiritual but not religious," Housden's new book Keeping the Faith Without a Religion offers us a way to recognize and embrace the extraordinary mystery of our lives without resorting to dogmatic beliefs or nihilistic scientism. He invites us to investigate: . Faith and belief-how the unattainable desire for certainty has come to replace our true understanding of faith . Becoming your own spiritual authority-guidance for building a personal faith based on your own inner experience . How we can integrate a regular spiritual practice into our lives without subscribing to a particular tradition, and more Today millions of people are seeking a new approach to spirituality that honors both the rational and the mystical in equal measure. With Keeping the Faith Without a Religion, Roger Housden offers a guidebook for this growing population of free-thinking seekers-an inspiring call to step beyond the need for answers and trust ourselves to the unfolding of our singular, extraordinary life.
